CMS EHR Incentive Program
Incentive programs have been established to help defray costs and to support a provider’s transition to and meaningful use of electronic health records.
As part of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment (ARRA) Act, The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) established Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs. In 2011, these payments become available to eligible professionals and eligible hospitals as they adopt, implement, upgrade, or demonstrate Meaningful Use of certified EHR technology in ways that improve quality, safety, and effectiveness of patient-centered care.
The August 30, 2010, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) final ruling for Meaningful Use and Certification provides many of the parameters and requirements for these incentive programs.
